In Bhutan, the importance of biodiversity is accentuated by the country’s
unique social, cultural, economic and physiographic conditions. Buddhism
plays a predominant role in the lives and culture of the people, and biodiversity
is of great importance as reverence for nature and all living things is fundamental to Buddhism. Local communities worship natural features such as wild animals, forests, ridges, mountains, and lakes as these are considered critical for their spiritual wellbeing.
