Engaging youth to eradicate poverty and ensure sustainable consumption and production

More than 73 million young people around the world are affected by unemployment. According to the World Youth Report, lack of decent jobs can impose long-term negativity on a young person’s ability to engage.

The 2016 Human Development Report for Asia and the Pacific asks countries to invest in youth to boost future growth and investments. Hence, the 2016 theme for the International Youth Day is “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production.”

Sustainable consumption entails the use of products and services that meet basic needs of communities while safeguarding the needs of future generations.

According to the 2014 Labour Force Survey of the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources (MoLHR), 54.8 per cent of Bhutan's total estimated population is below 30 years of age while the percentage of elderly population, of 65 years and above, stands at 6.6 percent.

This will, in turn, improve public participation and productivity as youth grow older. However, while engaging the youth on transition from youth to adulthood, Bhutan also needs to deal with challenges such as youth unemployment and other growing issues such as drug and alcohol addiction.

Bhutan’s current youth unemployment rate stands at 9.4 per cent which is coupled with growing use of drugs and alcohol. Moreover, inadequacies in skills and education have been found to add to such problems.

Investing in sustainable production also creates new markets and employment opportunities and helps ensure the social inclusion of all persons in their societies everywhere. This year’s theme emphasizes on a cross-sectoral approach to sustainability and the vast socio-economic, political, and environmental linkages needed to achieve it.

International Youth Day

In 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the General Assembly declared August 12 as the International Youth Day, which gives an opportunity to celebrate young peoples’ views and initiatives. Celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters and around the world recognizes the importance of youth efforts, collaboration and participation in implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and in ensuring poverty eradication.
