[29-01-2011] In 2010, Bhutan engaged itself in preparatory activities for the first ever local government elections after adoption of parliamentary democracy in 2008. These preparations included capacity building for the Electoral Commission, technical readiness and the conduct of a Functional Literacy and Possession of Adequate Skills Test for all potential contestants. Best Practices for the Project for Enhancing Rural Income and Livelihoods

[05-01-2011] This documentation of “Best Practices for the Project for Enhancing Rural Income and Livelihoods through Sustainable Agricultural Development and Micro-enterprise in Bhutan” was funded by Poverty Thematic Trust Fund, United Nations Development Program. The Project, jointly funded by Poverty Environment Initiative (PEI) and Poverty Thematic Trust Fund (PTTF) with US$ 267,550, has made a great progess in one year. It is hitting the bull’s eye in poverty alleviation through improving the living conditions by renovating existing houses or constructing new houses and by building income generating assets in Lamtang in Goshing Geog in Zhemgang Dzongkhag and Pam-Chaibi in Gongdu Geog in Mongar Dzongkhag. The primary reason for the success and sustainability of the Project is its integrated approach to uplift the socio-economic standard of the poverty villages. The approach consists of improving physical living conditions, building assets for income generation through improved agricultural production and supplementing nutritional intake of the target communities. With a total budget outlay of Nu 148.074 billion (equivalent to USD 3.174 billion), the Plan aims to achieve Poverty Reduction, Enhanced Democratic Local Governance and Effective and Efficient Service Delivery. Bhutan saw the adoption of the Constitution and the smooth transition to a democratic constitutional monarchy. National Action Program to Combat Land Degradation

[22-12-2009] It is estimated that worldwide 1.97 billion hectares of all usable land have been affected by various forms of human-induced land degradation. Deforestation, overgrazing, fuelwood consumption, agricultural mismanagement, industries, urbanization, and infrastructure development are the key causes. Poverty, population growth and natural factors such as extreme climate and unstable geology also contribute significantly. At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, the international community called on the UN General Assembly to establish an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to prepare a legally binding international instrument to combat desertification. Report on Public Enviroment Expenditure Analysis

[20-12-2009] An assessment of the ‘Public Environmental Expenditure (PEE)’ of the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) during the 9th Plan period was commissioned by the Department of Public Accounts.
